Northwestern to Unveil $900M Stadium Against Penn State on Oct. 2

Northwestern University is set to unveil its new Ryan Field, a $900 million stadium, on October 2, 2023. This date marks exactly 100 years since its predecessor, Dyche Stadium, hosted its inaugural game in 1926. The new facility will have a seating capacity of 35,000, designed specifically for Big Ten football games.

Stadium Features and Design

The state-of-the-art stadium boasts sloped seating that brings fans closer to the action. Every seat is equipped with cushioned chairbacks and covered by canopies, ensuring comfort and protection from weather conditions. This approach promises to enhance the overall fan experience.

Pat Ryan Jr., CEO of Ryan Sports Development, emphasized the commitment to creating a premium experience for every fan. He remarked on the importance of respectful treatment for attendees, saying, “People want to be treated respectfully. They work hard for their money.”

Game Schedule and Openers

  • Season opener against South Dakota State on September 5 will take place at Martin Stadium.
  • Second nonconference game against Colorado on September 19 will also be played at Martin Stadium.
  • The highly anticipated opening game at the new Ryan Field is against Penn State on October 2.

Northwestern aims to showcase its new facility during a nationally televised match-up against Penn State. Athletic Director Mark Jackson expressed enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the stage it provides to display both the stadium and the culture established by head coach David Braun.

Team Background

Northwestern won a close game against Penn State last year with a score of 22-21, which led to significant changes within the Penn State coaching staff. The Nittany Lions are now under the guidance of former Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, while Northwestern’s coaching staff includes Chip Kelly as the offensive coordinator.

With the new Ryan Field, Northwestern University is poised to elevate the college football experience for fans and players alike, fostering community engagement and spirit in this historic milestone for the program.
