Virginia Tech Football Reveals New Staff Appointments
Virginia Tech’s Head Football Coach James Franklin has announced new coaching appointments that promise to enhance the program’s performance. These appointments blend championship experience and development skills, reinforcing every aspect of the Hokies’ football team.
Coaching Staff Highlights
- Brent Pry – Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach
- 30 years of coaching experience.
- Led Virginia Tech to back-to-back bowl games in 2023 and 2024.
- Previously served as defensive coordinator at Penn State.
- Sean Spencer – Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach
- Nearly 30 years of coaching experience.
- Last coached at Texas A&M, assisting in an 11-1 season and a playoff berth.
- Coached at Florida and with the New York Giants before joining Virginia Tech.
- Anthony Midget – Pass Game Coordinator/Safeties Coach
- Played safety for Virginia Tech from 1996-1999.
- Over 20 years of coaching experience, including the NFL and college.
- Former assistant secondary coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- Ty Howle – Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends Coach
- Six seasons at Penn State with various roles.
- Recognized as the National Tight Ends Coach of the Year in 2024.
- Norval McKenzie – Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs Coach
- Returned after three seasons at Georgia Tech.
- Coached running backs who achieved over 3,900 yards and 32 touchdowns.

- Doug Shearer – Special Teams Coordinator

Support Staff Updates
Franklin also confirmed several additions to the support staff. This includes five members who previously worked under him at Penn State. Additionally, eight members from the previous Virginia Tech staff will continue their roles in the program.
