Qualicum Beach Art Exhibit Explores ‘What Would Hockney Do?’
Sylvie Peltier has curated an art exhibit that pays tribute to the iconic British artist David Hockney. The exhibition, titled “What Would Hockney Do?”, is currently on display at the Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach. Art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to visit until March 7, 2026.
About David Hockney
At 88 years old, David Hockney is known for his profound influence on 20th-century art. He earned the prestigious Gold Medal from the Royal College of Art in London. His vibrant artwork spans various media, including painting, drawing, collage, and photography.
Inspiration Behind the Exhibit
For Peltier, Hockney’s approach to art has been a source of inspiration. “I wanted to explore what I can learn from him,” she stated. She admires Hockney’s willingness to express himself through his art, as he often painted subjects that brought him joy.
- Hockney’s dachshund paintings, created during the AIDS crisis, reflect personal themes of loss and joy.
- Peltier opted to focus on rabbits in her local environment of Qualicum Beach, celebrating what brings her happiness.
Visitors and Events
The exhibit features opportunities for visitors to engage creatively. Attendees can enter a contest for a chance to win one of Peltier’s paintings by selecting their two favorite pieces from the display. A special celebration is scheduled for February 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. at TOSH (122 Fern Rd. West) in Qualicum Beach.
