Somerset Launches RSV Vaccine Campaign to Protect Elderly
NHS Somerset has initiated a campaign to launch a new RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) vaccine aimed at protecting the elderly population. This effort is crucial as current statistics indicate that nearly 30% of individuals aged 80 and above, along with 50% of those over 75, have yet to receive the vaccine.
Understanding RSV and Its Impact
Respiratory Syncytial Virus is known to spread easily through coughs and sneezes. It poses a significant risk, particularly to older individuals, as it can lead to severe lung infections. According to NHS data, approximately 9,000 people over the age of 75 in the UK are hospitalized each year due to RSV.
Vaccination Campaign Details
The new RSV vaccine is being offered to specific groups:
- Individuals aged 75 to 79 years
- Anyone who turns 80 on or after September 1, 2024
- Pregnant women from 28 weeks onwards
This vaccine not only helps the elderly but also provides protection to newborns in their first few months of life. Mike Kelly, who oversees neighbourhoods and vaccinations for NHS Somerset, emphasized the importance of the vaccine by stating, “It can make a real difference to staying well over the winter months.”
How to Get the Vaccine
Eligible patients are encouraged to contact their General Practitioner (GP) to schedule their appointment for this free vaccine. This proactive approach aims to increase vaccination rates among vulnerable populations and enhance public health safety during the winter season.
As the campaign progresses, it is critical for the community to recognize the value of vaccination in mitigating the effects of RSV among the elderly.
