Police reports indicate that McKenna punched a man twice after a verbal exchange, leading to severe injuries, including a broken jaw and a missing tooth. The incident occurred near a parking garage on Saturday evening.

Details of the Incident

According to police records, the assault happened around 8:45 p.m. Witnesses reported that McKenna and his companions were leaving Doggie’s Pub, where a hockey event was hosted following Penn State’s game earlier that day. The game concluded at approximately 4:20 p.m., and the pub was located about 150 feet from the parking garage entrance.

The police affidavit details that security camera footage captured the incident. Officer L. Sharer, assigned to the case, found the injured man at Mount Nittany Medical Center, where he observed dried blood on the man’s lips and noted the missing tooth. Due to the man’s struggles to communicate, friends assisted in providing an account of the events to law enforcement.

Consequences of the Assault

The maximum punishment for first-degree felony aggravated assault in Pennsylvania can reach up to 20 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine. John Hanna, an associate director for Penn State athletics, stated that while the university is aware of the charges, they cannot provide further comments due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

McKenna’s Background and Future Prospects

McKenna is in his first season with the Nittany Lions after previously playing three seasons in the Western Hockey League. He emerged as a promising candidate for the NHL Draft and was recognized as the first hockey player to secure a six-figure NIL deal as he transitioned to NCAA hockey.

Despite current challenges, McKenna remains one of the top players for the Nittany Lions, leading the team with 32 points from 11 goals and 21 assists in 24 games. The 2026 NHL Draft is scheduled for June 26-27 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
