Tourist Fatality Raises Alert for 20ft Waves in Canary Islands

A recent tragic incident in the Canary Islands has heightened alerts due to dangerous weather conditions, specifically 20ft waves. A tourist was killed while paragliding in the popular British holiday destination of Tenerife during adverse weather.

Tragic Accident Highlights Dangers in Tenerife

The fatality occurred during a group excursion when the paraglider launched from the cliffs near Puerto de la Cruz. The individual disappeared mid-flight, prompting a two-day rescue operation. Emergency services believed the victim became stuck on the rocky terrain.

On discovering part of the parachute floating in the sea, rescuers intensified their efforts. A body was subsequently located near the docks of Puerto de la Cruz. The mayor of the area, Leopoldo Afonso, confirmed the recovery during an interview on Televisión Canarias. The nationality and age of the victim have not yet been released.

Rescue Efforts Amid Severe Weather

The recovery mission faced significant challenges due to the wild weather battering the region. Waves exceeding 20ft in height and storm conditions complicated operations. The Spanish weather agency Aemet issued a yellow alert, warning that these hazardous wave conditions would persist.

  • Dangerous waves expected to continue at 20ft with 12-second intervals.
  • Strong winds from the northwest could cause severe gusts on high ground.
  • Authorities advise locals and tourists to stay away from coastal areas.

Since the search began on Wednesday at 11 am, Civil Guard helicopters have been instrumental in the rescue efforts. However, the extreme weather hampered visual inspections by divers and boats from Maritime Rescue.

Safety Warnings for Tourists and Locals

Afonso highlighted the importance of adhering to safety measures along the coast. He urged everyone to exercise caution when faced with turbulent sea conditions. Recent months have seen an uptick in drownings in the Canary Islands, particularly around natural pools and promenades.

Authorities continue to issue flood warnings as storms persist, emphasizing the need for awareness and respect for safety protocols during such unpredictable weather events. Tourists have been warned against engaging in any nautical activities until conditions improve.
