Jim Schwartz Exits as Browns DC for 2026 Season

Jim Schwartz has officially exited as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns for the 2026 season. Despite attempts by the Browns to retain him on new head coach Todd Monken’s staff, Schwartz’s decision is final.

Schwartz’s Tenure with the Browns

During his three seasons with Cleveland, Schwartz made a significant impact. His defensive unit ranked in the top four for yards allowed in two of those seasons. In a challenging 2025 campaign, Schwartz’s defense was often viewed as the team’s main strength.

Under Schwartz’s leadership, standout player Myles Garrett set a new record for single-season sacks and was named Defensive Player of the Year. Linebacker Carson Schwesinger was also recognized as Defensive Rookie of the Year during the NFL Honors.

Monken’s Comments on Schwartz

Head coach Todd Monken discussed Schwartz’s expertise during his introductory news conference. He acknowledged Schwartz as an outstanding defensive coordinator but refrained from making comments about Schwartz’s future at that time.

Path Forward for the Browns’ Defense

Monken indicated that he intends to maintain the current defensive system. He emphasized the importance of the defense’s talent and stated, “We’re not planning on changing the system. We’re built for the system that they’re in currently.”

Future Coaching Candidates

As the Browns look to fill Schwartz’s position, they may explore options from other teams. Reports suggest that they could consider assistants under Texans DC Matt Burke, who previously worked with Schwartz. Potential candidates include:

  • Dino Vasso – Houston DBs coach
  • Cory Undlin – Defensive passing game coordinator

The Cleveland Browns are strategically positioning themselves to ensure a seamless transition in their defensive coaching staff following Schwartz’s exit.
