Amit Shah Launches Bharat Taxi, Nationwide Rollout in Three Years

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently inaugurated ‘Bharat Taxi’, India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform. This significant initiative follows a successful two-month pilot in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat. Shah announced the goal of a nationwide rollout within the next three years.

Bharat Taxi: A Revolutionary Ride-Hailing Platform

During the launch, Amit Shah stated, “In three years, Bharat Taxi will be rolled out across the country, from Kashmir to Kanniyakumari and Dwarka to Kamakhya.” This platform aims to offer a sustainable and inclusive alternative to existing services from companies like Uber and Ola.

Ownership and Profit Distribution

Shah clarified that Bharat Taxi operates as a cooperative, ensuring that taxi drivers have ownership of the service. The profits generated will be shared directly with the participating drivers, promoting their financial welfare.

Key Features of Bharat Taxi

  • Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002
  • Launched on June 6, 2025
  • Zero-commission, surge-free pricing model
  • Direct earnings distribution among drivers

Backed by eight prominent cooperative organizations, Bharat Taxi aims to emerge as an indigenous alternative to foreign-funded ride-hailing services. The pilot operation that began on December 2 saw an impressive response.

Growing User Base

Since the pilot launch, the platform has registered over 300,000 drivers and more than 100,000 users. Currently, it completes over 10,000 rides daily across the two initial regions.

Financial Impact and Support for Drivers

To date, around Rs 10 crore has been directly distributed to drivers through this initiative. Bharat Taxi also prioritizes social security for drivers, known as ‘Sarathis’, offering health and accident insurance, along with retirement savings plans.

Bharat Taxi represents a significant step forward in revolutionizing India’s transportation sector, focusing on driver empowerment and cooperative ownership. Its expansion plans promise to reshape the ride-hailing landscape in the coming years.
