Parents Urge Return of Plaque Honoring Brentwood 5 Victims in Calgary
Nearly twelve years after the tragic events that claimed the lives of five young adults in Calgary’s Brentwood neighborhood, families of the victims are advocating for the return of a commemorative plaque. This plaque honored Jordan Segura, Josh Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Zachariah Rathwell, and Lawrence Hong, all of whom lost their lives during a house party in April 2014.
Brentwood Five Memorial and Its Significance
The Quinterra Legacy Garden, located at South Glenmore Park, serves as a memorial site for the “Brentwood Five.” Opened on August 14, 2021, the garden features musical instruments and a stage, creating a space for community engagement with the arts, reflection, and remembrance.
The Infamous Incident
- Incident Date: April 2014
- Victims: Jordan Segura, Josh Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Zachariah Rathwell, Lawrence Hong
- Perpetrator: Matthew de Grood, found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder
As families visit the garden for solace, they find a mix of peace and ongoing grief. Marlene Hong, mother of Lawrence, expressed that the garden symbolizes a small measure of healing and connection.
Recent Theft of Memorial Plaque
On what would have been Kaiti Perras’ 35th birthday, family member Gregg Perras discovered that the bronze plaque, which depicted a tree representing the lost lives, was missing. This theft has drawn outrage and sadness from those affected by the tragedy.
“I’m kind of disgusted, to be honest,” Perras stated regarding the loss of the memorial. Incidents of bronze plaque thefts have surged, attributed to rising metal values, according to the Calgary Police Service.
Police Investigation
Authorities are investigating the theft, reviewing security footage from nearby locations. They encourage anyone with information to come forward, holding hope that the plaque may still be recovered.
A Call to Action
The families have made a heartfelt plea to the individual responsible for the theft. “Just lay it by the rock, we’ll put it back up,” Perras urged. They hope for a simple act of compassion, allowing the community to restore the memorial.
Despite the recent loss, the Quinterra Legacy Garden remains an important place for healing and community connection. Families express that, while they deal with pain, the garden provides hope and unity.
