B.C. Fans Travel South for Super Bowl Excitement

As political tensions intensify between Canada and the United States, travel by Canadians to the U.S. is declining. However, many fans from British Columbia are breaking that trend to support the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60. The Seahawks are set to face off against the New England Patriots in a highly anticipated matchup.

Canadians Show Love for Seahawks

Roxy Ellis, a Seahawks superfan from Agassiz, British Columbia, shared her enthusiasm for the game. Despite current diplomatic issues, she decided to travel to California to support her favorite team. Ellis has attended several home games at Lumen Field in Washington state, including the NFC Championship game.

A Unique Experience

“I had to experience it,” said Ellis, expressing her excitement for being at the Super Bowl, even without a ticket for the game. This reflects the strong connection many British Columbians have with the Seahawks.

Decline in Canadian Travel

  • Canadian land travel to the U.S. fell by 30% last year.
  • Air travel for Canadians to the U.S. continues to decline.

Despite this trend, the Seattle Seahawks have noted an increase in their fanbase from Canada. Over 4,000 season ticket holders reside north of the border, with many being from British Columbia.

Season Ticket Aspirations

Terry Dickson, a North Vancouver resident, has been a lifelong Seahawks fan. Although he opted not to attend games in person this season due to the current political climate, he expressed that the Super Bowl is an exception. “It is the Super Bowl… they might not be in it again during our lifetime,” he explained.

Dickson also mentioned that he and his wife were recently accepted into the Blue Pride ticket builder list, hoping to secure their own tickets for the upcoming season.

For British Columbians, the Super Bowl represents more than just a game; it is a chance to celebrate their team against the backdrop of a challenging political situation. The loyalty and dedication of these fans are evident, as they travel south despite broader travel declines.
