Dodgers Sign Catcher Seby Zavala and Pitcher Jordan Weems
The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially announced their roster of 32 non-roster invitees for Spring Training. Among these players are catcher Seby Zavala and pitcher Jordan Weems, who have recently signed minor league contracts.
Player Profiles: Seby Zavala and Jordan Weems
Seby Zavala, 32, is a right-handed catcher known for his defensive skills. He has a career batting average of .205 with a .271 on-base percentage across 194 Major League Baseball games. Last season, Zavala played in Triple-A with the Boston Red Sox, where he struggled with a batting line of .164/.273/.333 and recorded a striking 36% strikeout rate.
Jordan Weems, a 33-year-old right-handed relief pitcher, has played in the MLB for six consecutive seasons. Last year, he made four appearances with the Houston Astros and allowed seven runs over 4.1 innings, resulting in a career earned run average of 5.51 across 160 innings. Most of his previous season was spent in Triple-A, where he posted a 4.44 ERA over 46.2 innings while striking out 24% of batters faced.
Competition in the Catching Position
With the Dodgers, Zavala will compete for a backup role against Chuckie Robinson, who also has Major League experience. The current favorite for the backup position behind Will Smith is Dalton Rushing, a promising second-year player. The team’s depth is further complicated by Ben Rortvedt, who was recently reclaimed from the Cincinnati Reds. He is contesting for the same spot but may face waivers if he doesn’t secure a place in the roster.
Additional Invitees
- Wyatt Mills: A reliever who has a 6.21 ERA from 38 appearances with the Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals. He signed a minor league deal last August.
- Carlos Duran: A power pitcher who spent most of his career in the Dodgers system before being traded to the Oakland Athletics.
- Antoine Kelly: A left-handed pitcher known for his high-velocity fastball but struggled with command issues.
Nick Senzel, a former top pick, also received an invitation to camp after hitting .252/.341/.408 at Triple-A Oklahoma City last season. His minor league deal indicates a commitment to continuing his development within the organization.
As the Dodgers prepare for Spring Training, the addition of Zavala, Weems, and other invitees adds exciting competition and depth to the team’s roster.
