Team GB Leads Curling Competition at 2026 Winter Olympics

As the 2026 Winter Olympics approach, Team GB is preparing to take center stage in the curling competition. The recent legacy of British curling has evolved since Rhona Martin’s historic gold medal win in Salt Lake City 24 years ago. That moment marked Britain’s first Winter Olympics gold in 18 years, igniting a once-overlooked sport into the limelight.

Team GB’s Curling Preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympics

The current Team GB curlers are redefining perceptions. These athletes train rigorously, combining strength, strategy, and endurance in their preparation. The team’s training regimen starts early, with daily sessions beginning at 08:30 AM.

Intensive Training Regimen

  • Two ice sessions of two hours each
  • One gym session daily
  • Three strength-focused gym sessions weekly
  • Two conditioning sessions weekly
  • Additional weekend workouts to maintain fitness

Each training component is specifically tailored for curling. Hammy McMillan, a coach for the men’s rink, emphasizes that athletes undertake Olympic lifts like clean and jerk, snatches, and squats. The use of ski machines, rowers, and assault bikes enhances their conditioning.

Changing the Game with Physicality

According to Bobby Lammie, who collaborates closely with McMillan, the current physical standards are impressive. “The numbers we put up, I don’t think people would expect them,” he states, highlighting a shift in the game’s physical demands.

The women’s team mirrors this trend. Jen Dodds, a 2022 Olympic gold medallist, showcases exceptional strength and skill. Rebecca Morrison, the skip for the women’s team, acknowledges the rigorous demands of their sport. “You need a lot of core strength to even stay upright on the ice,” she notes.

Understanding the Skill Set

Many outside the sport may underestimate curling. However, it requires a combination of balance, strength, and strategic thinking. Morrison adds, “It’s a lot harder than people realize to even keep your balance.”

As Team GB gears up for the upcoming Winter Olympics, the commitment of its curlers is evident. They are not just athletes; they are formidable competitors ready to showcase the depth of their training and skill on the world stage.
