Man Charged with Confining, Killing Spouse in Southeast N.B.

A 41-year-old man has been charged in connection with the confinement and murder of his common-law spouse in southeastern New Brunswick. The suspect, identified as Alex Beers, appeared before the Moncton provincial court on Wednesday, facing multiple serious charges.

Charges Details

Beers faces three charges related to the case:

  • First-degree murder of Hyde Jochelman
  • Confinement of Jochelman
  • Failure to provide necessities for life

The alleged offenses occurred between November 18, 2020, and October 27, 2021, in Saint-Paul, a rural community approximately 30 kilometers north of Moncton.

Incident Overview

On October 27, 2021, at about 2:35 p.m., the New Brunswick RCMP responded to a report of a sudden death at a residence in Saint-Paul. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the body of 33-year-old Jochelman. Initial findings were inconclusive, but later investigations classified her death as suspicious.

Investigation Developments

From 2022 to 2024, new evidence prompted the RCMP to reopen the case, ultimately leading to the suspicion of homicide. A news release issued last month highlighted that a suspect had been identified prior to Beers’ arrest but no arrests were made until recently.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

On February 10, 2024, Beers was arrested in Moncton. He has been remanded in custody and is slated to return to court on February 26, 2024. RCMP Staff-Sgt. Dan Sharpe emphasized the importance of these charges in providing closure to Jochelman’s family. He remarked on the complexity of such investigations and commended the dedicated efforts of the police team involved.
