Avoiding Political Involvement is Crucial

During the press conference for the Berlinale International Film Festival, renowned German filmmaker Wim Wenders emphasized the importance of focusing on creative work rather than political involvement. This year’s jury consisted of notable figures from various backgrounds, including South Korean actor Bae Doona, Polish producer Ewa Puszczyńska, American director Reinaldo Marcus Green, Nepali filmmaker Min Bahadur Bham, Japanese director Hikari, and Indian archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.

Avoiding Political Involvement is Crucial

Wenders expressed his views on the intersection of film and politics, urging his fellow jurors to maintain a clear boundary. The discussion quickly shifted when a journalist questioned the festival’s historical involvement with political issues, especially concerning the current conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. The question implied a call for the jury’s stance on the German government’s actions in these crises.

  • Key Panelists:
    • Wim Wenders (Germany)
    • Bae Doona (South Korea)
    • Ewa Puszczyńska (Poland)
    • Reinaldo Marcus Green (USA)
    • Min Bahadur Bham (Nepal)
    • Hikari (Japan)
    • Shivendra Singh Dungarpur (India)
  • Support for Downplaying Politics:
    • Puszczyńska argued that the films presented are not intended to convey political messages.
    • Wenders reiterated the need for filmmakers to act independently of political influences.

Puszczyńska elaborated that while films can provoke thought, expecting personal political alignment from the jury is unreasonable. Wenders supported her perspective, emphasizing that the role of filmmakers is to serve the audience rather than political agendas.

Film as a Medium for Change

Responding to the notion that cinema can bring about change, Wenders noted the unique power of films to foster empathy. He argued that while films may not influence political decisions, they can alter public perception and inspire viewers. Wenders declared, “Movies can change the world, not in a political way.”

Reinaldo Marcus Green, director of “Bob Marley: One Love,” also shared insights on the evolving landscape of film distribution. He acknowledged the shift towards streaming platforms but emphasized the importance of traditional theatrical experiences. Green expressed optimism for young filmmakers, suggesting that more opportunities now exist than ever before.

The Berlinale is set to commence with Shahrbanoo Sadat’s “No Good Men,” opening on Thursday and continuing until February 22, 2026.
