Safety Board Updates on Delta Airlines Crash at Pearson Airport
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has provided an update regarding the ongoing investigation into the Delta Air Lines crash at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. As the one-year anniversary of the incident approaches, the Board emphasizes that it remains “too early” to identify the causes of the crash.
Crash Overview
On February 17, 2025, Delta Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, crashed upon landing after arriving from Minneapolis. The aircraft caught fire after flipping over and skidding on the tarmac. Fortunately, all 76 passengers and 4 crew members survived, though 21 individuals sustained injuries and required hospitalization.
Preliminary Findings
A preliminary report by the TSB, released in March, suggested that the aircraft landed at an unusually high speed. Data indicated it descended at approximately 1,100 feet per minute, which exceeds normal landing speeds. Wind gusts likely contributed to this increased speed.
- Incident Date: February 17, 2025
- Departure Location: Minneapolis
- Total Passengers: 76
- Crew Members: 4
- Injuries Reported: 21
Investigation Details
The TSB’s examination included a comprehensive metallurgical analysis of the aircraft’s landing gear and wings. Flight data and cockpit voice recorders are also being reviewed. The landing gear reportedly malfunctioned upon touchdown, contributing to the severity of the incident. A significant jet fuel release ignited shortly after, complicating the evacuation process.
The cockpit door jammed, forcing pilots to escape through an emergency hatch after all passengers evacuated. In addition to examining flight data and eyewitness accounts, investigators reviewed surveillance footage from Pearson Airport and assessed the meteorological conditions at that time.
Legal Actions and Compensation
In the aftermath of the crash, multiple passengers have pursued legal action against Delta Air Lines in U.S. courts. Delta offered $30,000 in compensation to those on board, stating that it was without conditions. The airline has committed to fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Future Investigation Focus
The TSB is set to finalize its analysis of all technical data, flight operations, and laboratory results. A comprehensive final report will be drafted once all findings are collated. The investigation highlights the emphasis on safety and diligence in determining the causes of this significant aviation incident.
