2026 NFL Franchise Tag Period Begins Today

The NFL’s franchise tag period begins today, February 17, 2026, and will remain open until March 3 at 4 p.m. ET. This time frame allows teams to assess their roster and decide whether to tag certain players or negotiate long-term contracts.

Understanding the Franchise Tag Process

Initially, teams may hold off on making announcements regarding player tags. Typically, the deadline serves as a strategic lever to negotiate long-term extensions before opting for a one-year tender. Should negotiations stall, teams can then utilize the franchise tag, which helps retain key players.

Key Deadlines and Negotiation Periods

Once a franchise tag is applied, teams and players have until July 15 to reach a multiyear agreement. If a deal is not finalized by this date, the player will operate under the conditions of the one-year tender. Additional negotiations concerning alternative amounts or incentives may also take place, provided they remain within a one-year framework.

Types of Franchise Tags

There are three franchise tag options available for teams to consider:

  • Non-exclusive Franchise Tag: This is the most frequently used option. It offers a one-year tender based on the average of the top five salaries at a player’s position or 120% of their previous salary, whichever is higher. The tagged player can negotiate offers from other teams, while the original club has the right to match any contract or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.
  • Exclusive Franchise Tag: This option grants the tagging team sole negotiating rights. A player tagged under this category receives a one-year tender that averages the top five salaries at their position for the current year or 120% of their previous salary. This tag is typically reserved for players who would command significant trade value, often akin to a franchise quarterback.
  • Transition Tag: This tag provides a one-year tender based on the average of the top ten salaries at the player’s position. The original team retains the right of first refusal if another club extends an offer. However, if the team does not match the offer, they receive no compensation.

The franchise tag process is vital for NFL teams seeking to balance talent retention with salary cap considerations. As the tag window opens today, teams will begin evaluating their strategies for the upcoming season.
