Tyrone Wheatley Appointed Illinois Running Backs Coach

Tyrone Wheatley has been appointed as the running backs coach at the University of Illinois, as announced by head coach Bret Bielema. Wheatley brings with him an impressive 18-year coaching career and a decade of experience as an NFL running back.

Tyrone Wheatley’s Coaching Experience

Wheatley has held various coaching positions, including roles with the:

  • University of Michigan

His most recent role was as the head coach at Wayne State University, serving from 2023 to 2025. Prior to that, he led Morgan State University from 2019 to 2021 and held a coaching position with the Denver Broncos in 2022.

Success in the NFL

Wheatley excelled as a running backs coach in the NFL. During his tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he guided Leonard Fournette to a 1,000-yard season in 2017. The Jaguars finished that season with:

  • 18 rushing touchdowns, ranking second in the league
