Storm Pedro: Snow and Ice to Impact UK This Week

The UK is preparing for wintry conditions this week as Storm Pedro approaches, bringing significant snowfall and icy conditions. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across various regions, impacting Wales and parts of central and southern England.

Weather Warnings and Forecasts

The yellow weather warnings are effective from Wednesday afternoon until early Thursday morning. Rain warnings will also be in force along the south coast, expected from 6 am Wednesday to 8 am Thursday. The Met Office warns of heavy rain leading to potential flooding and travel disruptions.

Expected Rainfall and Snow Accumulation

Forecasts predict rainfall between 10 to 20mm across most areas, with coastal regions potentially receiving up to 30mm. Dartmoor in Devon may experience as much as 50mm.

  • Rainfall Expectations:
    • 10-20mm generally across the UK
    • Up to 30mm near the south coast
    • As much as 50mm in Dartmoor, Devon
  • Snow Accumulation:
    • 2-5 cm of snow above 150-200 metres
    • 10-15 cm possible above 250-300 metres in specific areas
    • Small accumulations of less than 2 cm in lower elevations

Impact on Travel and Health

The icy conditions could lead to slips and falls, especially on untreated surfaces in Wales and southwestern England. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather alert from 6 pm Tuesday evening until 6 pm Friday, anticipating an increased demand on healthcare services.

Regional Weather Forecasts

Areas such as Birmingham and Worcester are under a yellow weather warning for snow from 4 pm on Wednesday to 6 am Thursday. Similar rain warnings apply from Kent to Cornwall during the same time frame.

Wind and Temperature Changes

Alongside the rain, strong winds are expected, which may exacerbate weather conditions. While southern England braces for snow, northern regions may remain dry. Meteorologist Steven Keates notes that Thursday will offer only slight improvements as the wind eases.

By the weekend, conditions are expected to become milder, with temperatures reaching the low-to-mid teens, accompanied by further spells of wind and rain.
