Cartagena Beaches to Launch Open Water Swimming Lanes This Summer
Cartagena is set to enhance its aquatic sports environment by launching dedicated open water swimming lanes this summer. This initiative aims to provide a safer and more organized swimming experience for both casual and competitive swimmers.
Details of the Open Water Swimming Lanes
- The swimming lanes will be located at Levante Beach in Cabo de Palos and San Ginés Beach in La Azohía.
- Each lane will be 500 metres long and will run parallel to the shore.
- Only swimmers will be permitted in these lanes; boats and jet skis will be prohibited.
Purpose and Goals
The primary goal is to enhance safety for open water swimmers, as the sport’s popularity has increased. The dedicated lanes will minimize potential conflicts with marine traffic. Beachgoers can still enjoy swimming in the designated bathing areas without any restrictions.
Implementation Timeline
The Cartagena City Council has sought permission to occupy parts of the public maritime domain for this project, aiming for implementation between 2026 and 2029. If approved, the open water swimming lanes are expected to be operational by the upcoming summer.
Location and Design
- The San Ginés channel will connect Cala del Pino to the eastern breakwater at La Azohía.
- Both lanes will feature buoys placed every 25 metres to mark the swimming routes.
Rules for Swimmers
Swimmers using the new lanes will need to adhere to specific regulations to ensure safety and cleanliness. These include:
- Respecting the placement of buoys.
- Avoiding the lanes during rough weather.
- Leaving no waste behind.
- Not tampering with buoys.
Maintenance and Funding
Proper maintenance of the lanes is part of the project plan, particularly considering previous storm damages to similar installations. The estimated investment for the project stands at approximately €17,000, ensuring longevity and usability over the designated four-year period.
