Dandjinou Secures Fifth Place in 1500 Meters

In a competitive and turbulent 1500-meter short track speed skating final, Canadian athlete William Dandjinou secured a fifth-place finish. This event took place on Saturday, marking Dandjinou’s second disappointment in just a few days, as he had also missed the podium in the 1000 meters earlier that week.

At 24 years old, Dandjinou is currently ranked number one in the world in short track. Despite his recent setback, he remains hopeful, stating, “One day, I will be an Olympic champion.” Following the race, he quickly passed by the media, visibly disheartened but determined to improve on his performance.

Dandjinou’s Journey in the Olympics

Dandjinou already holds a silver medal from the mixed relay event held on Tuesday. He plans to compete again in the 500 meters on Monday evening, where he currently dominates the World Cup circuit. Additionally, he is part of the team for the 5000-meter relay.

Other Quebec Competitors

  • Steven Dubois, another Canadian, faced challenges during the A final and ended up crashing into the wall.
  • Félix Roussel did not advance past the semifinals, receiving a yellow card for causing a fall.

The gold medal in the 1500 meters went to Dutch skater Jens van ‘t Wout, with South Korea’s Daeheon Hwang taking silver and Latvia’s Roberts Krūzbergs earning bronze.

Preliminary Races

To reach the final, Dandjinou relied on strategic thinking, akin to his other passion, chess. He led most of the race, confidently detaching himself from the pack with two laps to go.

Dubois also faced a tough semifinal, skimming close to last place before making a move that led him to the finals, thanks to a penalty imposed on an Italian competitor.

Roussel, on the other hand, encountered a crash in the final round of his semifinal, which prevented him from advancing.

Upcoming Events

Dandjinou will re-enter the ice for the 500 meters qualifications and look forward to representing his team in the 5000-meter relay competition scheduled for Monday.
