Top NFL Special Teams Coach Considered for Packers Head Coach Position

As the Green Bay Packers consider candidates for the special teams coordinator position, Cameron Achord has emerged as a top contender. This follows Rich Bisaccia’s decision to step down after the 2024 season. Achord previously led the New England Patriots’ special teams from 2020 to 2023.

Cameron Achord’s Coaching Background

Achord’s coaching career began in 2010 as a graduate assistant at Southern Miss. He quickly advanced to the role of special teams coordinator at Southwest Mississippi Community College in 2013. Achord soon added roles as quarterbacks, running backs, and tight ends coach. In 2018, he joined the Patriots as assistant special teams coach.

In 2020, under Achord’s leadership, the Patriots ranked first in punt-return average and net punting. His special teams unit also ranked 11th in kickoff-return average that season. However, the following years saw mixed results:

  • 2021: 6th in punt-return average, but allowed three blocked punts.
  • 2022: 6th in punt-return average, fell to 27th in kickoff coverage.
  • 2023: Improved to 6th in kickoff coverage and 3rd in kickoff return.

Endorsements and Support

Achord received strong endorsements during his tenure. Matthew Slater, a longtime Patriots special teams standout, spoke highly of Achord when he was promoted in 2020. Slater emphasized Achord’s ability to connect with players and prepare them effectively.

Despite some down years, Slater stated, “This is not on Coach at all. I think this is on us as players.” Belichick also backed Achord, stating he was a good coach who successfully led the league’s special teams in 2020.

Recent Developments and Future Prospects

Following his time with the Patriots, Achord served as the assistant special teams coordinator for the New York Giants. His units there ranked 20th in 2024 and improved to 9th in 2025. With Bisaccia’s departure, it’s clear that Packers coach Matt LaFleur is taking these transitions seriously and is prepared for interviews in the coming days.

As the Packers evaluate their options, Achord’s proven track record and endorsements could position him as a strong candidate for the head coach role. The Green Bay community will be watching closely as this situation develops.
