Speed Skater Refocuses on Main Event After Surprise Warmup

South Korean speed skater Chung Jae-won is making headlines at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Initially, he aimed to compete only in the men’s mass start event. However, a last-minute opportunity arose for him to participate in the 1,500-meter race.

Decision to Compete in 1,500m

Chung was chosen as the first alternate for the 1,500m, taking place on February 19. Unsure of the potential impact on his training for his primary event, he deliberated before ultimately deciding to race. His final time was 1:45.80, earning him 14th place among 30 competitors.

Thoughts on the Race

After the event, Chung expressed his concerns to reporters. “I worried that competing might disrupt my training for the mass start,” he stated. “However, I realized that a competitive race could help me relax and assess my speed.”

This marked Chung’s first 1,500m race in two years. He acknowledged the challenges he faced, particularly adjusting to the outer lane after focusing on the inner lane during his mass start preparations.

Preparation for Mass Start Event

Despite his recent race, Chung’s focus remains on the mass start event, a hybrid competition blending traditional long track speed skating with tactical elements from short track skating. He feels confident in his cornering skills and is determined to leverage them during the race.

Looking Ahead to the Mass Start

  • Chung aims to exceed his previous silver medal win at the last Olympics.
  • He also secured a medal in the recent World Cup season.
  • His ultimate goal is to reach the podium at this year’s event.

Chung also highlighted the competition, particularly mentioning Jordan Stolz of the United States. Stolz has already won multiple medals in the Olympics and is expected to be a key challenger in the mass start. Chung assessed, “If I can keep pace with him, I will have my chance at success.”

As the Winter Olympics progress, Chung Jae-won is focused on harnessing his strengths and seizing the opportunity for victory in his main event, the mass start.
