As events unfold, the bus driver is shot, leading Annie, a passenger, to take the wheel and navigate through heavy traffic in Los Angeles. Their desperate efforts to save the people on the bus become the film’s gripping heart.
Critical Acclaim and Box Office Success
Upon its release in 1994, Speed received rave reviews. It currently holds an impressive 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s box office performance was equally remarkable, amassing over $121 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.
Award Recognition
Speed’s acclaim culminated in two Oscar wins the following year: Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing. This recognition solidified its status as a landmark film in the action genre.
Behind the Scenes
In a 2014 interview, Graham Yost revealed that Keanu Reeves was not the initial choice for the role of Jack Traven. Other actors considered included Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Wesley Snipes, and Woody Harrelson. The eventual casting of Reeves came after a suggestion from someone connected to the studio.
Yost also noted that Annie Porter was originally conceived as a comic relief character, prompting him to consider Ellen DeGeneres for the role. However, as the script evolved, the part ultimately went to Sandra Bullock, who brought depth to the character.
Fans of action thrillers will not want to miss the opportunity to experience this classic when it becomes available on Hulu.
