Buttler Vows to Stay Aggressive Despite World Cup Frustration

Jos Buttler expressed his frustration regarding his recent performance in the T20 World Cup. Despite reaching over 4,000 runs in T20 International cricket, Buttler has struggled to find form during the tournament. In four matches, he has scored only 53 runs, with his highest scores being 26 and 21 in the opening matches against Nepal and West Indies, respectively. He was dismissed for just 3 runs in both matches against Scotland and Italy.

Buttler’s Commitment to an Aggressive Playstyle

On his podcast, “For the Love of Cricket,” Buttler acknowledged that he has found it challenging to convert starts into significant scores. He noted that his recent performance lacked the big contributions he aimed for, leading to frustration. He stated, “I’ve been getting starts but not managing to go on.” This struggle has been evident over his last 16 T20 innings, where he has scored only one half-century.

As T20 cricket demands an aggressive approach, Buttler is determined not to alter his playing style. He emphasized the importance of continuing to push for runs, even when struggling. Buttler remarked, “T20 asks you to keep making plays. You can’t afford to play conservatively.” He’s aware that, despite the pressure, it is crucial to maintain a positive attitude to perform well.

Advice from Nasser Hussain

Former English cricketer Nasser Hussain provided Buttler with some advice through Sky Sports, suggesting he should give himself a chance to settle at the crease. However, Buttler countered that T20 requirements differ from those in longer formats, where taking time to play yourself in might be more viable.

Looking Ahead in the World Cup

England has advanced to the Super Eight stage and will face Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Their first match is scheduled against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. Buttler mentioned that the Sri Lankan team has been performing well, particularly highlighting Pathum Nissanka’s recent success with a century against Australia.

  • Match Date: Sunday afternoon (local time)
  • Location: Pallekele
  • Previous Performance: England recently swept Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series

Buttler is aware of the challenges ahead, especially with the unique conditions expected during the day match, such as the transition into darkness. He concluded with an admission of the unpredictability of World Cup matches, stating that past performances have little impact on upcoming games.
