REC Solar has announced the launch of a 3.3 MW rooftop solar array for self-consumption at Arctic Cold’s new facility in Santa Maria, California. This project marks a significant development in the company’s renewable energy initiatives.

Project Overview

The rooftop solar installation is part of a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). REC Solar will maintain ownership and operation of the solar array, integrating it into their portfolio as an independent power producer.

Facility and Operations

Arctic Cold’s facility primarily handles cold storage for fresh and frozen fruits. These products are distributed to various regional food service companies and retailers. Construction on the new solar array is set to commence shortly, following the completion of a utility study.

The rooftop solar installation will be primarily used for self-consumption, with any surplus energy fed back to the utility under a net metering agreement. This approach allows Arctic Cold to effectively manage its energy needs while also exploring potential for battery storage in the future.

Future Implications

This collaboration with REC Solar positions Arctic Cold to tackle future energy volatility and operational costs. James Presta, a business development manager at REC Solar, stated that the project is at the higher end of rooftop commercial solar installations. He noted that, unlike many contemporary projects, interconnection challenges are negligible for this installation.

As Arctic Cold continues to invest in advanced facilities, the partnership with REC Solar represents a proactive step toward sustainable operations, balancing cost savings with environmental responsibilities.
