Government Unveils Multi-Billion SEND Funding Overhaul

Keir Starmer has announced significant reforms to the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system in the UK. These changes are aimed at ensuring that all children, especially those who don’t fit the typical mold, receive the support they deserve. Starmer criticized the previous Conservative government’s handling of this issue, calling their legacy a “stain on their education record.”

The overhaul of the SEND funding system is part of broader initiatives focusing on child welfare. Starmer emphasized that good schools require a healthier society. The new measures aim to address various social issues, including:

  • Tackling child poverty
  • Increasing mental health support
  • Protecting children from online harm

Personal Experience Influencing Change

Starmer shared insights from his personal life, referencing his brother Nick’s challenges with learning disabilities. Nick faced numerous obstacles due to complications at birth and passed away on Boxing Day in 2024 at the age of 60. Starmer reflected on how Nick’s early experiences significantly impacted his life and opportunities.

“I witnessed how hard Nick had to fight every day just to be seen and recognized within an education system that had low expectations for him,” Starmer stated. He believes that many children with disabilities have been let down by the traditional education system.

Starmer’s commitment to change extends beyond policy; it embodies a vision for a more inclusive society. He aspires for the UK to recognize and value the contributions of every individual. By prioritizing a comprehensive overhaul of the SEND system, the government aims to create an education framework that serves all children effectively.
