Costco Recalls Kendamil Baby Formula Over Toxin Concerns
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil baby formula sold at Costco due to toxin concerns. The affected products are one-kilogram containers labeled “with whole milk.” These may contain cereulide toxin, which can lead to food poisoning.
Kendamil Baby Formula Recall Details
Cereulide toxin is known for its resilience; it can survive heat treatments that eliminate most bacteria.
- Product: Kendamil baby formula
- Size: One-kilogram containers
- Label: “With whole milk”
Health Concerns
While no illnesses have been reported, the recall was initiated due to a case identified in another country. Recent recalls from Nestlé and Danone were also linked to similar toxin concerns.
Production and Contamination
Kendal Nutricare, the manufacturer, stated that cereulide has been associated with arachidonic acid oil, a source of Omega-6 fatty acids. During a supply disruption, two batches of baby formula sold at Costco in Canada used an alternative oil source. These batches were produced in May 2025.
- Batch Codes:
- 897274
- 888632
Although these batches comply with European safety standards, they do not meet Health Canada’s more stringent guidelines.
Precautionary Measures
Kendamil issued a notice indicating that Health Canada recommended the withdrawal of any batches potentially affected by the ingredient source, irrespective of lab results showing compliance with safety limits.
Consumers who have purchased Kendamil baby formula are advised to check their products for the mentioned batch codes and to stay informed about further updates from the CFIA and Kendamil.
