Robert Whittaker Eyes UFC Light Heavyweight Move for Optimal Performance

Robert Whittaker, the former UFC middleweight champion, is planning to step into the light heavyweight division. He will weigh 205 pounds for his next fight. This decision comes after a well-needed break following his split-decision loss to Reinier de Ridder in July 2025. Whittaker expressed his desire to explore this new weight class during an interview with Submission Radio.

Transition to Light Heavyweight Division

Whittaker’s career has seen him compete as a 170-pounder before moving up to middleweight. Recently, after suffering two consecutive losses, including a first-round submission defeat to Khamzat Chimaev, he feels it’s time to try something different. “I’m on the tail end of my career, so I have to try rather than just think about what-ifs,” he stated.

Training and Preparation

The decision to move up was influenced by Whittaker’s training at a heavier weight. He emphasized that while he can still make the middleweight limit, cutting weight may not be beneficial for his performance. “The camp performance really suffers on the back end of a weight cut,” he explained. His goal is to build muscle and properly adjust to competing at 205 pounds.

Future Plans

Whittaker aims to return to the octagon in June. He wants to ensure he has adequate preparation time to adapt to the new weight class. “I want to give myself about four months to prep and come in there at my best,” he said.

Career Achievements

With 26 wins out of 35 professional MMA fights, Whittaker’s record includes notable victories. He has some impressive knockouts against fighters such as Ronaldo Souza and Derek Brunson. He has also secured decision wins over tough opponents like Yoel Romero, Jared Cannonier, and Darren Till.
