RAF Pilot Soars Over Nelson Skies
Squadron Leader Harrison, a seasoned RAF pilot, now calls New Zealand home. He moved there in early 2020, just as the Covid-19 pandemic emerged. His journey has taken him from flying prestigious jets to becoming an instructor at the Central Flying School at RNZAF Base Ohakea.
RAF Pilot Soars Over Nelson Skies
Harrison has an impressive background. He has flown RAF Jaguars, Hawks, and Buccaneers. Additionally, he was involved in the first Gulf War in the early 1990s. His extensive experience made him a valuable asset to the Black Falcons aerobatic team, where he currently holds the number five position in the display formation.
Life in New Zealand
The appeal of New Zealand’s relaxed lifestyle, coupled with its beautiful countryside and favorable work-life balance, attracted Harrison to the country. He frequently commutes between Nelson and Manawatū, embracing his new role as a flying instructor.
Joining the Black Falcons
Although Harrison never applied to join the RAF’s famous Red Arrows, he found a unique opportunity with the Black Falcons. Young instructors at the RNZAF were primarily needed to operate frontline aircraft. This left experienced pilots, like Harrison, to occupy significant roles within the aerobatic unit.
