Netflix Streams First Live F1 Race in New Apple TV Deal
In a groundbreaking move, Netflix is set to broadcast its first live Formula 1 race in the United States. This development comes as part of a strategic partnership with Apple TV, which has secured the television rights for F1 in the U.S. The deal aims to elevate audience engagement for both streaming platforms.
Details of the Agreement
The collaboration will see Apple TV stream the new season of the Netflix documentary series “Drive to Survive,” while Netflix will provide live coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix in May. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting how Netflix has significantly contributed to F1’s growth through its documentary series.
Enhanced Viewing Experience for Fans
Subscribers to Apple TV will enjoy a premium experience tailored for F1 enthusiasts. The platform will feature an F1 landing page that showcases previous race highlights and additional video content. To enrich the live viewing experience, viewers will have access to multiple feeds during races.
- Fans can select from up to four simultaneous feeds.
- Regular features include a driver tracker and a data channel.
- Special podium channels will enable viewers to automatically follow the top three drivers’ on-board footage.
- Team-specific channels will allow fans to watch the international feed and listen to team radio communications.
- Sky Sports F1’s coverage will also be available on Apple TV.
Ian Holmes, F1’s chief media rights and broadcast officer, noted that this approach would offer U.S. fans an unprecedented viewing experience. He emphasized that American audiences have never encountered this type of F1 coverage before.
Accessible F1 Content
While most races will be exclusive to Apple TV subscribers, plans are underway to provide some content for free. In addition to Netflix broadcasting the Canadian Grand Prix, another streaming service, Tubi, will be allowed to show selected events as part of its collaboration.
This partnership marks an exciting chapter for both Netflix and Apple TV, promising to engage and expand the F1 fan base in the United States.
