Susan Sarandon Criticizes Hollywood Censorship, Applauds Spain’s Stance on Gaza

The actress Susan Sarandon is currently in Spain to receive a career achievement award at the 40th Goya Awards. During a press conference in Barcelona, she addressed her support for Palestine and the challenges she has faced in Hollywood due to her activism.

Sarandon’s Criticism of Hollywood Censorship

Sarandon shared her experience of being dropped by her agency, UTA, in 2023. This decision followed her participation in several rallies advocating for Palestine and her controversial comments regarding the Jewish community’s experience in the current climate. She expressed regret for those comments but highlighted the repercussions of her activism.

Hollywood’s Response

  • Sarandon stated she was effectively shunned in Hollywood for her stance on Gaza.
  • She noted, “I was fired by my agency for marching and speaking out about Gaza.”
  • As a result, her ability to secure major film roles was significantly impaired.

Since then, Sarandon has found representation in the UK and Italy. She explained that she has shifted her focus to independent films in Europe. Recent projects include a film in Italy and a play at the Old Vic in London.

Support from Spain

During her address, Sarandon expressed admiration for the Spanish government’s strong support for Palestine amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. She praised Spain and its leadership for demonstrating “strength and moral clarity” on this issue.

  • She highlighted the importance of voices like Javier Bardem’s in the U.S.
  • Sarandon remarked that such international support gives hope to activists in America.

She also stated, “When a nation stands up, it means so much to us.” Sarandon conveyed her feelings regarding the plight of the Palestinian people, describing their situation as a “horrible crime” and expressed shame over being complicit in it.

Broader Concerns

In addition to her comments on Palestine, Sarandon criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), calling its actions “unconstitutional” and alleging systemic injustices against marginalized communities. She commended grassroots movements that resist ICE policies, emphasizing the need for community-led activism to combat such systemic issues.

Sarandon continues to advocate for social justice while navigating the complexities of her career in an industry fraught with censorship and political pressures.
