Doha Student Wins Prestigious Global NESA Award

The American School of Doha (ASD) proudly announced the achievement of Grade 8 student Aaishah Chaudhary. She has earned the notable Stanley Haas/Luke Hansen Student Award for the 2025–2026 academic year. This award, sponsored by the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NESA), is presented to exceptional middle school students who exhibit remarkable character, leadership, and service.

About the Stanley Haas/Luke Hansen Award

Established in 1996, the Stanley Haas/Luke Hansen Award acknowledges students who showcase qualities such as perseverance, risk-taking, cultural respect, and a commitment to the welfare of others. Aaishah is among four international winners selected from a vast pool of candidates across the NESA region, which includes schools from Greece to India.

Aaishah’s Achievements

For her accomplishment, Aaishah received a $1,000 USD grant, a certificate, and a letter of commendation from the NESA Board of Directors. She was honored during a private ceremony at ASD.

Personal Reflection

Aaishah expressed her surprise at winning the award, saying, “I first saw this opportunity last year and was interested, but I didn’t invest in it. This year I went for it, put in the work, and was honestly surprised to win.”

Essay and Application Process

When asked about her standout qualities, Aaishah mentioned her essay. “I put everything into the essay. I wrote about what I truly believed in,” she stated. Her application process was self-directed, emphasizing the confidence gained from completing it independently. She did not seek help in proofreading her essay, which she found empowering.

Community Impact and Future Goals

Aaishah’s dedication to service is evident through her micro-lending initiative on Kiva, where she transformed an initial QR1,000 investment into over QR22,000, aiding entrepreneurs globally. She is particularly passionate about supporting female entrepreneurs and aims for a career in politics to advocate for change.

Advice for Future Applicants

Aaishah advised potential applicants to choose recommenders wisely. She suggested, “Make sure you choose people who really know you.”

Recognition of Peers

  • ASD also recognized two regional representatives: Zayan Ahmad and Akshee Bhargava.
  • Both students had their applications forwarded to the NESA selection committee.

Middle School Principal Dr. Almy commended all three students for their outstanding leadership and exemplary character. Their achievements highlight the commitment of ASD to fostering students who are not only academically proficient but also engaged in community service and leadership.
