Premier Scott Moe Visits India, Warns of Potential Lentil Tariff Increase
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe recently arrived in Mumbai, India, for a trade mission, where he raised concerns about potential increases in tariffs on Canadian lentils. This visit highlights the ongoing trade dynamics between Canada and India, particularly related to agricultural imports.
Concerns Over Lentil Tariffs
Upon his arrival on Friday, Moe expressed hope for tariff reductions on pulses, including lentils, peas, and beans. Currently, Canada faces a 10% tariff on lentils exported to India. Recent discussions indicate that these tariffs may potentially increase, which poses challenges for Canadian exporters.
In November, India implemented a 30% tariff on Canadian yellow peas, citing the need to protect local markets. Indian imports accounted for over 50% of all Canadian pulse imports between 2000 and 2020, according to Pulse Canada. This dependency underscores the significance of resolving tariff concerns.
Trade Mission Goals
Moe’s mission aims to strengthen trade relations, particularly focusing on Saskatchewan’s key exports such as potash and uranium. He emphasized the potential to enhance both the volume and range of products traded between the two regions.
Political Context
The backdrop of this visit includes recent tensions regarding foreign interference allegations involving India. Despite these challenges, Premier Moe remains committed to fostering dialogue and collaboration with Indian officials. He believes it is essential to engage in discussions about differing views while also identifying mutually beneficial opportunities.
Next Steps for the Delegation
- The delegation will travel to New Delhi next week.
- Premier Moe will attend the Raisina Dialogue conference in New Delhi from March 5 to 7.
- Following India, the delegation plans to continue to Australia and Japan.
As Moe continues his work in India, he aims to advance economic ties, emphasizing the importance of maintaining conversations that could lead to improved relations despite existing disagreements.
