Iran Achieves Significant Progress in Serious Agreement Discussions
Recent discussions between Iran and the United States in Geneva have shown significant progress toward a serious agreement. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi highlighted the advancements made during the third round of talks, describing them as some of the most serious negotiations with the U.S. to date.
Significant Developments in Iran-U.S. Negotiations
Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr al-Busaidi, who is mediating the talks, confirmed that both sides made noteworthy progress regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. Araqchi emphasized that the negotiations have become more focused and serious, moving towards the components of an agreement.
- Negotiation Dates: Ongoing since February 27, 2026.
- Next round: Scheduled for the following week.
- Locations: Geneva, Switzerland and Vienna, Austria.
During an interview with Iranian state television, Araqchi indicated that discussions on the United Nations Security Council and unilateral sanctions were key demands for Iran. It was agreed that technical teams from both sides would begin detailed discussions starting Monday, with assistance from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
International Presence at Negotiations
Rafael Grossi, the IAEA Director General, attended the negotiations in Geneva. Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing a meeting between Busaidi and Grossi, highlighting their discussions on technical issues related to Iran’s nuclear file.
Busaidi underscored the crucial role of the IAEA in ensuring transparency and managing relevant protocols during the talks. Previously, Iranian spokesperson Ismail Baghaei had mentioned Grossi’s expected participation in the negotiations.
Protests Amid Negotiations
As the negotiations continued, a group of Iranian government opponents gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in Geneva to protest. The demonstrators held flags and signs advocating for regime change in Iran, reflecting significant public dissent regarding the government’s dealings.
- Protest symbols: Flags of the Sun Lion and images of Shahrivar Reza Pahlavi.
- Slogan: “Iran desires regime change.”
Despite the ongoing U.S. military buildup in the Middle East, an Iranian official remarked that separating nuclear and non-nuclear issues could lead to a framework for agreement. This third round of negotiations is viewed as a crucial moment for diplomacy, aiming to avert further conflicts.
