Canada and India Forge Educational Partnerships in Mumbai

The Canadian and Indian governments are enhancing their educational collaboration. On Saturday, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand unveiled a new education strategy. This initiative includes the establishment of 13 partnerships between universities across Canada and India.

Key Developments in Canada-India Relations

Foreign Minister Anand’s announcement coincides with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first official visit to India since taking office last year. This visit signifies a thaw in relations between the two countries, which had previously soured due to accusations surrounding the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had alleged Indian involvement in Nijjar’s assassination, a claim denied by New Delhi.

Strengthening Economic Ties

During his visit, Prime Minister Carney emphasized the importance of natural partnerships between Canada and India. He noted the substantial Indian diaspora in Canada, with approximately 2 million Canadians tracing their roots to India. Additionally, around 400,000 Indian students choose Canada for their higher education each year.

  • Objective: Strengthen economic relations.
  • Goal: Double exports outside the U.S. from $300 billion to $600 billion in the next decade.
  • Aim: Attract $1 trillion in new investments by 2030.

Carney mentioned that Canada aims to lessen its economic reliance on the United States due to uncertainties from U.S. tariffs. He assured that Canada is a stable and reliable partner in today’s unpredictable world.

Meetings with Business Leaders

While in Mumbai, Prime Minister Carney met with leaders from several prominent companies. He held discussions with the CEO of Tata Sons, part of the Tata Group, which operates in various sectors, including technology, automotive, and finance. Carney also met with the CEO of Hinduja, a conglomerate involved in automotive, finance, health, and media sectors.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to New Delhi, where he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This trip marks the first leg of his ten-day journey through the Indo-Pacific region, which will also include visits to Australia and Japan.
