In a remarkable display of endurance and skill, Brigid Kosgei of Kenya established a new course record at the Tokyo Marathon. The 32-year-old athlete completed the race in an impressive time of 2:14:29, outpacing her nearest competitor by over two minutes.
Race Results and Records
Kosgei’s victory was not only significant due to her time but also because it broke the previous course record of 2:15:55, set by Sutume Asefa Kebede in 2024. The top three finishers in the women’s category were as follows:
- 1st: Brigid Kosgei (Kenya) – 2:14:29
- 2nd: Bertukan Welde (Ethiopia) – 2:16:36
- 3rd: Hawi Feysa (Ethiopia) – 2:17:39
In the men’s race, Tadese Takele from Ethiopia successfully defended his title. He finished with a time of 2:03:37, matching the time of second-place Geoffrey Toroitich from Kenya. Alexander Mutiso Munyao rounded out the top three, finishing just one second later.
Future Aspirations
Kosgei, who won a marathon silver medal for Kenya at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, has ambitious plans for her future. She intends to represent Turkey at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Kosgei expressed her desire to inspire young athletes in Kenya to follow in her footsteps, saying, “I want some young generation to follow my step to join me in Turkey.”
Men’s Race Insights
The men’s race was highly competitive, culminating in a thrilling sprint finish. Takele mentioned that he anticipated the decisive moment would come in the final kilometers. “Around 41km I wanted to wait and see what would happen and then I made my move right before the finish,” he stated.
This year’s Tokyo Marathon highlighted the incredible talent and spirit of marathon runners, with Kosgei’s record-setting performance and Takele’s thrilling victory showcasing the heights of athletic achievement.
