Lowry Ties Smotherman for Lead at Cognizant Classic

Shane Lowry has emerged as a formidable contender at the Cognizant Classic, having achieved a remarkable bogey-free round of 8-under 63. This performance catapulted him to a total of 13 under, sharing the lead with Austin Smotherman after three rounds at PGA National.

Lowry and Smotherman Share the Lead

Lowry, originally from Ireland and now residing in South Florida, expressed his aim to be among the leading groups heading into the final round. He noted that maintaining proximity to the leaders is essential for strategic play on the challenging course. “If the conditions are like this tomorrow, there are low scores out there,” he remarked, emphasizing the competitive nature of the tournament.

Lowry has a history at this event, previously finishing second in 2022 when the tournament was known as the Honda Classic. His experience has been a mix of highs and lows; last year, he tied for 11th but was in contention for much of the tournament.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Smotherman, who also led after the first two rounds, faced challenges on Saturday. He encountered back-to-back bogeys but managed to regain momentum with two birdies at the end of his round, finishing tied for first alongside Lowry. “Most excited for tomorrow,” he stated, highlighting the thrill of performing in front of fans.

The current leaderboard sees Nico Echavarria and Taylor Moore just behind at 12 under par, while Jimmy Stanger, who is poised to earn a check for the first time since April 2024, sits in fifth place at 11 under after a solid round of 65.
