LA Kings Reveal Coaching Staff Changes

The LA Kings have made significant changes to their coaching staff, announcing the departure of Jim Hiller. D.J. Smith has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The decision was confirmed by Ken Holland, the Vice President and General Manager of the Kings.

New Leadership at the LA Kings

Ken Holland emphasized the need for a leadership shift, stating, “At this point in the season, we believe a change in leadership is necessary to give our group the best opportunity to reach its potential.” Holland expressed gratitude to Hiller for his hard work and professionalism in his role.

Coaching Staff Changes

Alongside D.J. Smith, former player development coach Matt Greene will assist in the coaching duties. Smith has been with the LA Kings as an Associate Coach for two full seasons. He previously coached the Ottawa Senators from 2019 to 2024.

D.J. Smith’s Coaching Background

  • Age: 48
  • Previous Position: Head Coach of the Ottawa Senators (2019-2024)
  • Served as Assistant Coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs (2015-2019)
  • Tenure in Ontario Hockey League (OHL): Windsor Spitfires (2005-2012) and Oshawa Generals (2012-2015)

During his time with the Windsor Spitfires, Smith played a pivotal role in securing consecutive J. Ross Robertson Cups and Memorial Cups in 2009 and 2010, affirming his capabilities in developing winning teams.
