USA Track & Field Releases Statement on Half Marathon Championships
After the recent USATF Half Marathon Championship in Atlanta, a situation arose involving misdirection of athletes. The race, which serves as a selection event for the 2026 World Road Running Championships, encountered issues with course marking.
Protest Filed by Athletes
Following the race, athletes in the women’s division lodged a protest. They reported that the lead vehicle led them off course at a critical juncture. This issue spurred a review process by the USATF.
Appeals Process and Findings
The initial protest was denied, prompting an appeal. The jury of appeals concluded that the championship did not adhere to USATF Rule 243. The course was deemed inadequately marked at the point where misdirection occurred.
Despite recognizing the violation, the jury stated that the results could not be altered according to USATF regulations. Therefore, the finishing order remains final.
Looking Ahead to 2026
This event is crucial as the selected team for the 2026 World Road Running Championships will not be decided until May. USATF plans to review the misdirection incident thoroughly.
