Glasgow Council Grants World Cup Holiday to Thousands of Staff
Glasgow City Council has decided to grant an additional holiday for staff during the World Cup. This initiative is aimed at providing support to the local economy. The move is expected to benefit the city’s hospitality sector significantly.
Economic Impact of the World Cup Holiday
Allan Casey, the SNP councillor and workforce convener, advocates for this holiday. He believes it will deliver a “significant financial boost” to businesses in Glasgow. Casey stated during the administration committee meeting, “We as Glasgow City Council believe on balance this is the right thing to do.”
The council’s decision comes at a time when the local economy is in desperate need of support. The relaxation of licensing laws has also been introduced to manage crowds safely while they enjoy the World Cup matches.
Concerns from Opposition Councillors
Despite the potential economic benefits, not all councillors are in agreement. Labour councillor Elaine McDougall expressed concerns about the financial implications of the extra holiday. She stated that it does not align with the ongoing cuts within the council and criticized it as merely an opportunity for excessive drinking.
Another Labour councillor, John Carson, raised alarms over possible community dissatisfaction. He questioned the long-term effects of service disruptions that might result from the holiday.
