Canada Denies Involvement in U.S. Iran Strike Planning Amid Ongoing Queries
A senior Canadian general highlighted the possibility of Canadian military personnel being involved in planning air strikes on Iran, a claim contested by the Department of National Defence (DND). Prime Minister Mark Carney clarified Canada’s non-military stance on the conflict while in India, asserting that Canada was not involved in the military buildup or planning.
Current Status of Canadian Military Personnel
According to DND, Canada has 18 military members attached to Operation Foundation. These personnel are stationed at the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and the Combined Aerospace Operations Center (CAOC) in Qatar. Their primary role is to facilitate communication between the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and U.S. military operations.
DND has denied that Canadian military members participated in the United States’ Operation Epic Fury. However, questions remain unanswered regarding whether exchange officers were instructed to disengage from U.S. military planning.
Implications of Exchange Programs
Retired Major-General Denis Thompson explained that Canadian military exchange programs with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) typically involve active participation during conflicts unless explicitly restricted by the Canadian government. Canada’s military presence in CENTCOM includes members from the army, navy, and air force.
Escalation in Air Strikes
- U.S. and Israeli forces launched nearly 900 strikes on Iranian targets within the first 12 hours.
- Reported strikes concentrated on Iran’s missile program and military infrastructure.
- Attacks impacted 17 provinces across Iran.
The conflict intensified after the announcement of the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, confirmed by Iranian state media. As a response to the strikes, Iran launched missiles targeting several Gulf states, raising concerns about potential wider conflicts in the region.
International Reactions
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand expressed solidarity with the Iranian people and condemned Iran’s missile attacks on Gulf states. Countries such as Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain reported intercepting Iranian missiles, highlighting the increasing tensions in the region.
