Rich Nagy Appointed as Vandergrift Family Head Football Coach
Lehigh University has appointed Richard Nagy as the Vandergrift Family Head Football Coach. Previously the Defensive Coordinator for three years, Nagy oversaw a formidable defense during his tenure.
Background of Richard Nagy
Nagy is now the 31st head coach in Lehigh football history. Under his guidance, the Mountain Hawks finished with a 12-0 regular season record in 2025. His coaching staff also received recognition as the Dick Biddle Patriot League Coaching Staff of the Year.
Coaching Staff Promotions
- Dan Hunt: Promoted to Associate Head Coach from Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach
- Mike Kashurba: Transitioned to Defensive Coordinator from Special Teams Coordinator
- Mike Morita: Now Assistant Offensive Coordinator from Offensive Line Coach
- Jeff Comissiong: Elevated to Defensive Run Game Coordinator from Defensive Line Coach
- Eric Markovcy: Promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance
Nagy’s Accomplishments
During his time as Defensive Coordinator, Nagy’s defenses ranked among the best nationally. In 2025, the team led the Patriot League in several key defensive categories:
- Top rush defense in the FCS, allowing only 70.1 yards per game
- First in Red Zone defense with a 0.645 efficiency
- Second nationally in scoring defense, permitting just 13.9 points per game
- Fourth in total yards allowed per game at 278
- Fourth in team sacks per game with 3.31
Notable Players
Under Nagy’s leadership, six defensive players received All-Patriot League honors in 2025. Linebacker Tyler Ochojski was recognized as the Patriot League and ECAC Defensive Player of the Year. He also earned multiple All-America distinctions.
Past Coaching Experience
Nagy has nearly 40 years of coaching experience, covering Division I and III levels. Before his time at Lehigh, he served as head coach at Allegheny College. He developed numerous all-conference players there and previously held coaching positions at Old Dominion and Central Michigan.
