Montreal’s Underground City, known as RESO, is an extensive network that spans approximately 32 kilometers. This pedestrian haven lies beneath the bustling city center and serves as a vital link for residents and visitors. With around 500,000 individuals traversing its corridors daily, it provides shelter from harsh weather while facilitating easy access to various attractions and amenities.
Exploring Montreal’s Underground City: Highlights
Starting our journey at the vibrant Place des Arts, this cultural hub lights up with activities, especially during events like Nuit Blanche. This venue is underserved by the metro station bearing its name and hosts family-friendly programs, including magic shows and culinary workshops organized by La Tablée des Chefs.
Complexe Desjardins
Continuing our exploration, we come upon the Complexe Desjardins. Here, a stunning water fountain features prominently in the immersive installation Givrescence, available from March 1 to 8. During spring break, a circus-themed play area will entertain children, making this complex a fantastic stop.
Palais des Congrès
The RESO guides us to the Palais des Congrès, where we can glimpse the sunlight and access the vibrant Quartier chinois. This complex connects visitors to the Marché Saint-Laurent, which boasts local Montreal products and coffee from micro-roaster Jungle.
Centre de Commerce Mondial
Venturing further into the RESO, we reach the Centre de Commerce Mondial. This secretive gem features a dining area with a soaring glass ceiling, a beautiful fountain, and a segment of the Berlin Wall, gifted to Montreal in 1992. It stands as a poignant reminder of history.
Iconic Architectural Marvels
Before leaving the International District, it’s worth visiting the Édifice Jacques-Parizeau. This architectural masterpiece connects three towers through an impressive glass atrium. The building also serves a cinematic backdrop for the series “Avant le crash.”
