A viral video of a Marine veteran's arm snapping inside a United States Senate hearing room has ignited a firestorm — and a sitting senator is at the center of it. Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy of Montana assisted several Capitol Police officers in physically ejecting Brian McGinnis, a Marine veteran running as a Green Party candidate in North Carolina's Senate race, after he interrupted a Capitol Hill hearing on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. McGinnis said shortly afterward that his arm was broken during the clash with police and the senator. The incident, captured on video by a CBS News staffer and viewed more than 7 million times, has divided the country along predictable lines.

What Happened Inside the Senate Hearing Room: Second by Second

Brian McGinnis, 44, a Marine Corps veteran, professional firefighter, and Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina, arrived at the Hart Senate Office Building in his military uniform with a point to make about President Donald Trump's decision to commit U.S. forces to the conflict with Iran.

Just under 30 minutes after the Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing on military readiness began, McGinnis rose from his seat in the gallery and began yelling, exclaiming: "America does not want to send its sons and daughters to war for Israel." Capitol Police immediately moved to remove him from the hearing room.

Senator Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL lieutenant who serves on the Armed Services Committee, left his seat on the dais and rushed in to help subdue McGinnis, grabbing his lower leg as the Capitol Police attempted to carry him through the hearing room door. McGinnis hooked one of his arms around the door frame, and Sheehy moved to wrap an arm around McGinnis' shoulder and pry him away. An audible snap was heard on the video, and it appeared that either McGinnis' lower arm or wrist broke.

When Sheehy joined the scrum, a member of the public in attendance repeatedly cried out: "A sitting U.S. senator just broke the hand of a Marine." As Sheehy returned to his seat, the same man called him a "coward" and a "punk," to which the Republican senator appeared to respond by saying: "Go f*** yourself."

Tim Sheehy's Defense: "He Was Fighting Back"

Sheehy posted on X that Capitol Police had tried to remove a protester who was "fighting back." He said: "I decided to help out and deescalate the situation. This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one. I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence."

Capitol Police said in a statement that McGinnis "got his own arm stuck in a door to resist our officers and force his way back into the hearing room," and reported that three officers were also treated for injuries by local emergency medical services. Sheehy's office directed reporters to his X post and declined to offer additional comment.

Brian McGinnis's Charges: Seven Criminal Counts

McGinnis was arrested following the incident and faces three criminal counts for allegedly assaulting a police officer, three more for resisting arrest, and a further count of unlawfully blocking a Capitol passageway — seven charges in total. Protests are not permitted inside Congressional buildings, though they are permitted in designated areas on Capitol Grounds outside.

Mark Elbourno, a Green Party official who manages McGinnis' Senate campaign, told CBS News that McGinnis was placed under arrest and transported to George Washington University Hospital. Elbourno flatly rejected the assault allegation: "He wasn't assaulting anybody. He just wanted to be heard — speaking loud and clear. He was assaulted, actually. They broke his arm."

Veterans' Groups Condemn Sheehy's Involvement

The campaign group Veterans for Responsible Leadership reacted to Sheehy's account by saying: "Let's hope he sues the s*** out of you." Veterans' rights activist and podcaster Paul Rieckhoff said: "This is very, very ugly. And no U.S. senator needs to inject himself into this situation. For the safety of everyone — including himself. Just unnecessary and terrible to watch. This is what an America falling apart looks like."

Critics noted that Sheehy, whose Senate campaign received significant support from AIPAC-affiliated super PACs that back candidates favoring strong U.S.-Israel ties, physically inserted himself into the removal of a Marine veteran protesting American military involvement on behalf of Israel — a juxtaposition that generated enormous commentary across social media platforms.

Brian McGinnis Before the Hearing: "You Are Not Alone"

McGinnis had filmed a video on X earlier that morning explaining his intentions: "I'm here in D.C. trying to speak out against the Senate and ask them why they're going to send our men and women to harm's way when our elected officials said that it would be no world war. Anybody who feels disillusioned and betrayed by our government, you're not alone. Join us in demanding accountability for this betrayal."

After the incident, with a broken arm and seven criminal charges to his name, McGinnis launched a GoFundMe campaign to fund his North Carolina Senate bid. As he was finally led away from the Senate hearing room, he continued to shout lines from the Marine Corps' official hymn — an image that has become one of the most widely shared photographs of the incident.
