Fernando Alonso Provides Health Update Following Australian GP

Following his retirement from the Australian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has provided an update on his health. The Aston Martin driver faced a challenging race weekend, marked by concerns over potential nerve damage from vibrations caused by the Honda power unit. Team principal Adrian Newey indicated that both Alonso and his teammate, Lance Stroll, faced risks due to these vibrations.

Race Highlights and Technical Challenges

Alonso reported that he could manage only about 25 laps before the vibrations became problematic. In contrast, Stroll believed he could complete around 15 laps. Ultimately, Alonso retired from the race on Lap 21 out of 58, after an initial return to the track.

  • Alonso initially retired but rejoined the race.
  • He finished the race early in 17th place, classified as non-classified (NC).
  • Stroll completed 43 laps and also finished non-classified.

Vibrations’ Impact on Performance

After the race, Alonso commented on the ongoing issue with vibrations, likening the situation to Bahrain earlier in the season. He mentioned that Honda had made some adjustments, but the chassis issues remained unresolved.

“It is not the best feeling with this level of vibration,” Alonso relayed. He added that while Honda believed vibrations in the battery were lessened, the chassis required further isolation adjustments.

Looking Ahead to the Chinese GP

Alonso remains optimistic about upcoming races, particularly the Chinese GP. He stated, “We need to keep trying different solutions, especially on the chassis, to optimize our package.” He expects another challenging weekend but is determined to contribute as much as possible for his team.

Race Reflection

Reflecting on the race itself, Alonso highlighted his impressive start. He moved from 17th to 10th position in the opening laps, which he described as the most enjoyable segment of the race.

He acknowledged that despite the early success, problems soon arose. “There was a small issue on the data that forced us to stop the car. After repairs, we went back out, but another issue emerged, leading to a second stop.” Alonso’s experience underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the Aston Martin team as they work to enhance their performance moving forward.
