Avs bring Nazem Kadri back — and one veteran’s “is this real?” moment
At 8 p. m. ET, the Avs were set to visit the Dallas Stars, but Nazem Kadri’s day had already tilted into the unfamiliar: a life packed into moving parts, phone calls, and a final answer that arrived late. “I mean, is this real?” he said, trying to put words to a return he called “a very exciting situation. ”
What happened in the Kadri trade, and what did each team receive?
Nazem Kadri was traded back to the Colorado Avalanche by the Calgary Flames on Friday. Calgary received forward Victor Olofsson, unsigned forward prospect Maxmilian Curran, a conditional first-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft, and a conditional second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Colorado also received a fourth-round pick in the 2027 draft.
For Kadri, the deal carried more than a roster line. “Obviously super excited, ” he said. “You know, a team at the very top of my list. Man, I can’t wait. ”
Why did Kadri want Colorado again, and why did Calgary make the move?
Kadri framed the change as both personal and professional: a chance to rejoin familiar faces and chase what he called “another opportunity. ” He described the uncertainty that came with the process, the emotional whiplash of waiting for a final decision.
“One minute you think you’re out the door, and the next minute you think you’re staying, and the next minute you think you’re out, and you’re staying again. It’s a lot of flip-flopping, ” Kadri said. “These deals aren’t easy to come by. You have to have two working parties. At the end of the day I found out pretty late and I was excited, to say the least. ”
Calgary’s rationale was presented as a mix of respect for a veteran’s competitive timeline and a clear organizational pivot. Flames general manager Craig Conroy said Kadri “wants to win at his age” and wanted the chance for “another opportunity. ” Conroy also pointed to the direction Calgary is trying to take.
“For us, we knew where we’re going and with his age, this is something we needed to do, ” Conroy said. “The whole thing is to get back in the playoffs, to get going in the right direction and have these assets and the picks. ”
The standings underline that split in urgency. Colorado (41-10-9) sits first in the NHL standings and is six points ahead of the Dallas Stars in the Central Division. Calgary (24-30-7) is 15th in the Western Conference, 12 points behind the Seattle Kraken for the second wild card.
What does the deal mean for the Avs and for Kadri right now?
On paper, the Avalanche add a forward who has been producing this season: Kadri has 41 points (12 goals, 29 assists) in 61 games for the Flames. In the background is the record of a long career: he has 751 points (319 goals, 432 assists) in 1, 046 regular-season games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Avalanche, and Flames.
There is also a postseason track record explicitly tied to Colorado. Kadri has 44 points (19 goals, 25 assists) in 52 Stanley Cup Playoff games and won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.
Contract details help explain the structure of the move. Kadri is in the fourth season of a seven-year, $49 million contract with a $7 million average annual value, and Calgary retained 20 percent of his remaining salary.
Kadri, though, spoke less like a contract line and more like someone returning to a locker room he can picture with his eyes closed. He thanked Calgary for how the organization handled his exit.
“First and foremost, I’ve got to thank the Calgary Flames and how they handled business and how they treated a veteran player and found every way possible to try to make this connection for me, ” Kadri said. “Without them this couldn’t be possible… You know, I just can’t wait to get to work and see my buddies. ”
For Calgary, the return was framed as a reset that keeps options open: draft the players, or use the picks in other ways. “Whether we make the picks or… if we could just use the pick to get players, we’re going to look at all options, ” Conroy said.
Who is Victor Olofsson in this trade, and what changes for Calgary?
Victor Olofsson is the forward moving from Colorado to Calgary as part of the trade return. This season with Colorado, Olofsson has 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 60 games. His contract detail, as stated, is a one-year, $1. 575 million deal signed with Colorado on Aug. 20, 2025.
To Conroy, the larger point was building “assets” to accelerate a turnaround. “We’re trying to get this thing going in the right direction as quick as possible and right now we’re not where we want to be, ” he said.
In Kadri’s telling, the trade was also a message about how a team treats people on the way out. He said he believed the Flames’ approach matters, not just in the moment but in reputation over time: “there’s no doubt in my mind in a couple years the Calgary Flames are going to be a popular destination to play in. ”
Back where the day began—hours before puck drop in Dallas at 8 p. m. ET—the move left Kadri with a simple, unsettled joy, the kind that comes when a career’s uncertainty snaps into place. For the Avs, it is a roster decision aimed at the present. For Kadri, it sounded like something rarer: a return that still feels unreal.
