Mickey Rourke Withheld Rent Due to ‘Unacceptable’ L.A. Home Conditions
Mickey Rourke has recently commented on the deteriorating conditions of his Los Angeles residence, which led to his eviction case. At 73 years old, the actor and former boxer faces significant upheavals in his living situation after a March 9 judgment favored his landlord, Eric T. Goldie.
Rourke’s Legal Troubles
In December, Rourke was served a notice demanding nearly $60,000 in overdue rent. He was instructed to either pay the amount or vacate his home within three days. Following his default, a court judgment favored Goldie, resulting in the cancellation of Rourke’s lease.
Unacceptable Living Conditions
Rourke alleges that his decision to withhold rent stemmed from unacceptable living conditions at his home. He stated, “The reason I stopped paying rent was because the living conditions in the house had become unacceptable.” This was after months of issues that the landlord allegedly failed to address.
- Rodent problems in the house
- Unresolved plumbing issues
- Lack of basic maintenance
He claims he made repeated requests for repairs that went unacknowledged. “I simply could not continue paying for a house that was in such poor condition,” he added.
Impact of the Judgment
The March judgment was entered “by default,” suggesting Rourke did not respond to the complaint in time, resulting in Goldie gaining possession of the property. Rourke’s right to occupy the home has now been legally revoked.
Current Living Situation
After receiving the notice in December, Rourke was spotted moving out of his residence in January. His manager, Kimberly Hines, informed The Hollywood Reporter that he is currently staying in a West Hollywood hotel while searching for a more suitable place to live.
Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign, initiated by Liya-Joelle Jones, aimed to support Rourke. However, he publicly expressed confusion over the campaign, stating he had no knowledge of it and would not seek help from outside sources. Hines clarified the situation, explaining that Rourke was unaware of the initiative and how it escalated into a media frenzy.
