Cameron Young Wins the Players Championship 2026: Dramatic TPC Sawgrass Comeback Over Matt Fitzpatrick
Cameron Young

Cameron Young is the 2026 Players Championship champion. The golfer from Scarborough, New York came from four shots back on Sunday to claim the biggest title of his career at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. It is Young's second PGA Tour victory and his first Players Championship crown.

How Cameron Young Won the Players Championship 2026

An absolutely wild back nine on Sunday ended with Cameron Young tapping in for par and the win at TPC Sawgrass. Ludvig Åberg had a two-stroke lead heading into the back nine, but disaster struck as he bogeyed the 11th, double bogeyed the 12th, and bogeyed the 15th to fall out of contention.

As Åberg struggled, his Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick found an extra gear. Fitzpatrick birdied both the 12th and 13th holes to leap out to a one-stroke lead. The Young-Fitzpatrick pairing, the penultimate of the round, soon became the decisive matchup — whoever bested the other would claim the trophy.

The Iconic 17th and 18th Holes Decide the Players Championship

With cries of "U-S-A!" ringing out around the famous 17th island green, Young stuck his tee shot inside 10 feet, a good 20 feet closer than Fitzpatrick's tee shot. Young drained the birdie while Fitzpatrick could only par, and the two walked to the 18th tee tied at the top.

Young piped a 375-yard drive in the fairway on the par-4 18th, marking the longest drive on that hole in the ShotLink era dating back to 2003. Fitzpatrick hit his tee shot into the pine straw and was forced to pitch short of the green. Young missed his birdie putt, but Fitzpatrick then missed his 8-foot par putt that would have forced a playoff, allowing Young to tap in for par and the win.

Who Is Cameron Young — The Golfer Behind the Players Title

Young grew up in Scarborough, New York, in Westchester County just north of Manhattan. He was able to immerse himself in golf from an early age, as his father was the head professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club.

He attended Fordham Preparatory School in The Bronx and later attended Wake Forest University, where he studied economics and graduated in 2019. He turned professional shortly after and spent two years grinding through the Korn Ferry Tour before earning his PGA Tour card.

This is Young's second PGA Tour win — seven months after breaking through at the 2025 Wyndham Championship — and his first Players title. He collected 80 Official World Golf Ranking points with the victory, which will vault him significantly up the world rankings.

Matt Fitzpatrick Falls Short Again at TPC Sawgrass

Fitzpatrick reflected afterward that he feels very capable of getting himself inside the top five, but struggles to convert when the win is within reach. He expressed confidence that if he can bridge that gap, he believes more wins will follow.

The English golfer, a 2022 U.S. Open champion, was in prime position to add the Players Championship title to his resume before the closing holes unraveled his bid.

Åberg Collapses, Scheffler and McIlroy Fade at the Players Championship

Ludvig Åberg, the 54-hole leader, melted down with a back-nine 40 and ended tied for fifth, four shots behind Young. The Swede entered Sunday holding a three-shot lead and appeared poised for the defining victory of his career before the back nine at TPC Sawgrass delivered its verdict.

There were grand expectations for Rory McIlroy's return to TPC Sawgrass as defending champion, but his title defense was off from the start and he finished well outside contention. Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1, also struggled throughout the week and was forced to sweat through the cut line on Friday. Cameron Young, meanwhile, seized the moment that so many expected to belong to someone else.
