Southern Rail: Three disruption flashpoints after East Grinstead points failure, Sutton diversions and Croydon engineering works
southern rail faced a concentrated period of disruption this week, with an operational points failure at East Grinstead blocking lines, planned engineering diversions in Sutton for the weekend and a series of weeknight works affecting Croydon services. The combination of an unscheduled incident and scheduled engineering has forced route changes, replacement buses and targeted cancellations across multiple corridors.
Southern Rail immediate incident: East Grinstead points failure and operational response
An operational failure at the points near East Grinstead caused several lines to be blocked. At 6: 24pm ET on Thursday, March 19, Southern Rail said services to and from the station may be cancelled, delayed or revised and that disruption was expected to last until 8: 00pm ET. Trains that had come to a stand between stations would be moved back to a previous station, the operator added.
Passengers were instructed to remain on board if delayed between stations and to follow staff directions. The statement warned that tracks can be very dangerous and that, where an electric third rail is present, it remains live even during delays. Staff were described as working to obtain further information and there was no exact estimate for how long individual journeys might be affected.
Engineering weekend: Sutton diversions reshaping Saturday services
Planned engineering works will alter services around Sutton on Saturday, March 21 only, with trains running as normal again on Sunday, March 22. Specific route amendments include trains between London Bridge and East Croydon Peckham Rye being diverted after Tulse Hill and calling additionally at Crystal Palace and Norwood Junction.
Services that usually run between London Victoria and London Bridge will operate only between London Victoria and Crystal Palace, then continue to and from Epsom Downs West Croydon. No Southern Rail trains will call at stations between London Bridge and Crystal Palace Sydenham during the diversion. Trains that normally run between London Victoria and Epsom Downs will be diverted after Selhurst to run to and from East Croydon, while services between London Victoria and Reigate will be amended to run between Reigate and Redhill only. Passengers requiring central London onward travel were advised to change at Redhill for alternative Southern or Thameslink services to and from London.
Croydon weeknight engineering: cancellations, replacement buses and late-night amendments
A concentrated block of engineering work between Monday and Friday (March 16 to March 20) led to widespread alterations for services into Croydon. Overnight closures between Purley and Gatwick Airport from Monday to Thursday closed some lines at the end of service, meaning certain late-evening trains would be unable to call at Coulsdon South, Merstham and Redhill.
Two named late services were highlighted: the 11: 35pm train from London Victoria to Horsham and the 12: 08am London Victoria to Gatwick Airport service will not call at Coulsdon South, Merstham or Redhill. Replacement buses are scheduled to run between Purley and Gatwick Airport/Horsham, calling at stations Redhill, with journey times increased for passengers using those buses.
Separately, overnight engineering between London Bridge and East Croydon Sydenham from Tuesday to Friday closed lines until Friday morning. At the end of service on Monday to Thursday evenings, trains were to be amended between London Bridge and East Croydon Sydenham. The 12: 17am trains from London Bridge to Caterham will be diverted between London Bridge and East Croydon, running non-stop between London Bridge and Selhurst and expected to run later than usual. The 12: 35am trains from London Bridge to East Croydon will be replaced by a bus from London Bridge to East Croydon, calling at stations Sydenham.
Operator statement and passenger guidance
A spokesperson for Southern Rail offered operational guidance to affected passengers: “Trains that have come to a stand between stations will be moved back to a previous station. If your train is delayed between stations, please stay on board and listen for updates. You can also ask staff if you need more information. Staff know where you are and are working to get you moving as soon as possible. ” The statement reiterated safety advice: “For your safety, please don’t leave the train unless instructed. Other trains may still be running, and the tracks can be very dangerous. If the area has an electric third rail, it stays live even during delays and looks just like the other rails. “
The combination of an isolated operational fault and pre-planned engineering creates a layered risk to punctuality and connectivity on adjacent routes. Passengers planning travel over the affected days are advised to check service notices and allow additional time when replacement buses are in operation.
Will the operator’s on-the-ground response and scheduled engineering coordination be enough to prevent wider knock-on disruption in the coming days, and how will passengers adapt to the mix of emergency and planned changes to the network?
