Two men have been charged after the remains of 59-year-old Dr. mai diab were discovered following a house fire on Feb. 19 (ET) northwest of Edmonton, investigators say. Mai Diab: charges and alleged motive

Investigators named Mouhamad Fadi Orfahly, 44, as the man charged with first-degree murder in the death of the pediatric dentist; a second man faces charges of indignity to human remains and accessory after the fact to murder. Orfahly was arrested on March 9 (ET) and a 43-year-old resident of Oakville was arrested on March 12 (ET) in Toronto before being transported back to Alberta, where both remain in custody pending further court appearances.

RCMP say the remains of Dr. Mai Diab were recovered after crews extinguished a fire inside her home on Keystone Crescent in St. Albert, northwest of Edmonton. The fire caused limited structural damage and was quickly deemed suspicious, prompting the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit to take over and send the remains for autopsy.

Investigation details and community evidence

Staff Sgt. Derrick Gladdish of the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit said investigators determined the victim was specifically targeted for financial gain. “The investigation has determined that the victim was specifically targeted by these suspects for financial gain, ” he said, tying motive directly to the charges now before the court.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, also with the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit, highlighted the role of the community in advancing the inquiry. “We do believe right now, and our evidence will show, that the motivation here was financial gain against our victim, ” he said. He added the case showed “the senselessness of the whole thing” and called it “certainly a tragedy. ” Savinkoff noted neighbouring residents and businesses provided video surveillance that proved critical to identifying the accused.
